From individual tasks to intelligent workflows
Improving one task creates efficiency. Rethinking the flow of work across people and systems can create much more.

Look beyond the individual task
Many technology initiatives begin with a single activity: summarise a document, classify a request, retrieve information or automate a repetitive step. These improvements can be useful, but the larger opportunity often sits between the tasks.
A business process may involve email, documents, ERP, other applications and several people. Each individual activity can be relatively simple, while the handovers between them create delays and manual work.
Intelligent workflows address the process as a whole.
People, systems and digital employees working together
Imagine a customer request arriving by email. A digital employee interprets the request. Relevant customer, order or asset information is retrieved from the business systems. The next action is prepared based on defined rules and available information. Straightforward cases can move forward automatically, while exceptions or higher-risk decisions are sent to a person.
The employee no longer needs to move manually between several systems to build the complete picture. Instead, the workflow brings together the information and the next step.
Similar approaches can be applied in finance, procurement, maintenance, project management, supply chain and service. Anywhere work crosses system and organisational boundaries.
ERP remains a critical foundation
As workflows become more intelligent, core business systems become even more important. ERP provides transactions, master data, permissions, business rules and the operational context that intelligent tools need.
AI can interpret information, identify patterns and support or initiate actions. But connecting those capabilities safely to the business foundation is what allows them to become part of real operations rather than isolated tools.
This makes integration, data quality, process design and governance essential parts of the solution.
Design around the outcome
The objective should not be to build the largest number of agents or automate every step. It should be to create a workflow that produces a better outcome.
Where should automation take over? Where does human judgement create value? Which system should be the source of truth? What needs to be transparent and traceable?
Answering these questions requires both technical expertise and an understanding of how the business actually works. When that combination is in place, an intelligent workflow can do more than make a task faster. It can change how the process works from end to end.
Which workflow would you redesign if you could?
